Comment:  This pair of pictures shows a close up of the Crater Lake "Phantom Ship". The left side is an aerial photograph taken during this flight. The right side is a picture taken 17 years previous during the boat tour that Scott and Ed took around the lake. The formation is so named because from most directions it blends into the background walls of the crater and is very hard to make out. It is an andesite lava flow which is very resistant to weathering because it is bound together by minerals deposited by hot water inside Mount Mazama long ago. It is the oldest rock inside the caldera and was formed about 400,000 years ago. Phantom Ship stands about 167' above lake level.
