Julie departed San Carlos (SQL) airport near her maximum takeoff weight. Under those conditions she was very sluggish and could climb at only 400 feet per minute. (With less than full tanks and just Scott on board, she normally climbs at 850). At the time this picture was taken she had barely reached the 1500' floor of the controlled airspace around of San Francisco International Airport (SFO). The flight controllers routed her to the northwest parallel to the active runways (28L & 28R). The two parallel runways are 11,000' long and separated by only 750'. Subsequent controller directions turned us across the departure end of the active runway, over down town San Francisco and out over the northern bay. Mount Tamalpais (2,571' - 30 miles away), downtown San Francisco (15 miles away), and the Bay Bridge can be seen in the background As we crossed over the runway, the controller cleared her to climb from 1500 to 5500 and Scott "felt compelled to inform them that we'd need most of the 'Class Bravo' airspace to do it" |
