Comment:  Merced River and lower Yosemite Valley during pass up valley As we approached Yosemite Scott started to climb Julie. FAA regulations, Public law and simple prudence require aircraft to be 2,000 ft above the surface over Yosemite. Since the rims at the upper part of the valley are about 10,000 ft, we needed to get up to at least 12,000 ft. These altitudes are at or above the service ceiling for Julie, so we needed to take advantage of the winds coming in from the west off of the Pacific Ocean. They hit the Sierras and are forced up, creating up drafts which Julie could ride like a glider. However it makes for a very bumpy ride. At this point we are around 10,500 and I took this picture of the Merced River in the lower Yosemite Valley. An unfortunate fact of aerial telephotography is that the color is washed out of distant images. That color washout will be apparent throughout this album.
