Comment:  A view from the west of Mount Rainier, The broad top contains three named summits which are clearly visible in this picture. On the left is the lowest of the three summits, Liberty Cap (14,112'). In the center is highest, Columbia Crest (14,410'). On the right is Point Success (14,158'). Nisqually Glacier can be seen as it comes out of the summit snow and ice field. Since its terminus is near the Paradise Visitor's Center, this glacier is noted for being the best surveyed and most visited on the mountain. To the left and below Nisqually is Kautz Glacier one of the smallest on the mountain. Twice during the last century, the Kautz was the site of major mudflows, in October 1947and August 2001. Further to the left are South Tahoma, Tahoma and Puyallup Glaciers When this picture was taken Julie was at 12,000' about 5 miles west of Mount Rainier beginning a clockwise orbit. From a pilot's point of view, of interest is a trail of clouds coming off the summit, visible behind Liberty Cap. They mark turbulence resulting from the westerly winds striking the mountain.
