Approaching Mount Saint Helens (8,365'). Our plan was to orbit the mountain counterclockwise twice, once above the crater rim, once below. For this picture Julie was approximately 5 miles to the east southeast at 9250'. The barren area coming off of the mountain is the Upper Muddy River. Spirit Lake (3,408') is visible about 10 miles away on the left. We heard radio transmissions from a sightseeing helicopter in the area, which we never saw. Presumably it was at significantly lower altitude. |
